Town Council Makes Resolution in Consideration of COVID-19

At a Special Meeting of Council held on March 16, 2020 at 4:00 PM, the Council of the Town of Taber passed a resolution that makes some considerations for Town operations in light of the COVID-19 situation. There is NO State of Local Emergency in effect for the Town of Taber at this time. The Town of Taber has enacted its Emergency Operations Centre as a precaution only and for the sharing and coordination of information. 

The motion follows at the end of this release. However, the items that affect the public are as follows:
Closures and Cancellations
• The Aquafun Centre, Arena, Auditorium, Large/Small Ice, and Meeting Rooms of the Community Centre are CLOSED until further notice;
• Coffee with Council for March has been CANCELLED (March 19th and 20th);
• Meetings for the Recreation Board, Arts & Heritage Committee, Municipal Planning Commission, and Municipal Police Commission are suspended unless meetings are urgently needed.

Online Services and Town Drop Box


Wherever possible, residents are asked to pay for bills online (www.taber.ca/onlinepayments), access their Utility Bills online (www.taber.ca/ebilling), submit service requests online (www.taber.ca/servicerequests) and email or phone our staff (www.taber.ca/contact) instead of coming to the office in person.

Residents can also send payments via mail to Town of Taber, A 4900 50th Street, Taber, AB, T1G 1T1. Mailed payments must be date stamped by Canada Post for the payment due date.

There is also a secure drop box outside of the Town Administration Building front doors where residents can drop off documents if they so wish.

“This situation with COVID-19 is very fluid and Council is constantly monitoring the Government of Alberta’s recommendations,” said Mayor Andrew Prokop, “Based on those recommendations and in giving highest credence to the safety of our residents and staff, Council decided to make the resolution that it did today. These decisions were not made lightly, but they were made to help protect our citizens, and we as a Council are thankful to everyone for their continued cooperation and patience as we deal with this ever-changing situation.”

Council Resolution from the Special March 16, 2020 Meeting

MOVED by Councillor Tams that Council directs Administration to operationalize the following:

1. Continue to follow Alberta Health Services protocols as it relates to COVID-19

2. Accommodate primary care-giver staff whose children were attending licensed childcare, out-of-school care and pre-school programs by paying them to stay home for maximum of 14 flexible days, to give them time to determine other options available to them, with manager approval.

3. Closure of Town-operated recreation facilities, specifically the Aquafun Centre, Arena, Auditorium, Large/Small Ice and Meeting rooms, with corresponding bookings for these areas cancelled.  Summer programs are to be assessed as situations evolve, and will be determined by Administration.

4. Council suspends Board, Committee and Commission meetings for the Recreation Board, Arts & Heritage Committee, Development Authority (Municipal Planning Commission), and the Taber Municipal Police Commission until further notice, unless the meeting needs to take place on an urgent basis.

5. Administration’s determination of appropriateness to close municipal offices, based on best municipal practices.

6. Council authorizes Administration to undertake any organizational operational requirements, except for the authority of Council as detailed in Section 203 of the Municipal Government Act of Alberta. 

7. All items are subject to further review at any time depending on any further related Provincial direction.
